What is Financial Aid?
We use the term ‘financial aid’ in the broadest possible sense to mean any and all possible ways to obtain money intended to fund a student’s education. These can be classified in several ways:
- Awards/Fellowships/Grants/Scholarships - free money, usually for being a good student. Sometimes you have to apply for them, sometimes the school or some organization nominates you for them and you receive them automatically. There are differences between awards, fellowships, grants and scholarships but they are not worth going into. In rare cases, some of these will require you to take on extra responsibilities, e.g. community service or leadership roles in student organizations; however, the vast majority of these are free money with no strings attached. However, it is rare to find free money that will cover all your tuition, fees and living expenses.
- Student loans - money a bank or other financial institution will lend you to finance school-related expenses, usually at a low interest rate. Often, student loans must be co-signed by a citizen or permanent resident of the country of your study and therefore is not an option to many Singaporeans. This is not free money, you have to pay it off when you graduate.
- Work/study employment - International students are usually not allowed to work in the country they are studying in. However, special provisions in your student visa may allow you to work, usually on campus, in a part-time job. Typical jobs including being a teaching assistant or research assistant.
